Gear Review: Magnum Essential Equipment RD Apparel Shirt and Pants

RD shirt worn during AR build filming

These past 3 months I’ve been testing other Magnum Essential Equipment products.  We have been putting the RD Pant and Long Sleeve Shirt through its paces here in Southern California mountains and deserts as well as a few business trips to Utah, Nevada, and Texas.

We have had the opportunity to take them on several hunts, days at the range, in addition, to everyday wear.  In fact, they made a trip with us to ShotShow 2012 in Vegas.  I threw on a golf shirt and some tactical boots and made for a nice assemble for casual business wear.  In fact, I wear them about once a week or so to work as a Pastor.  So their versatility is well documented for several uses.

We recognize that these products are advanced tactical wear and therefore most likely worn by law enforcement, military, and private security teams.  However, it is interesting after wearing them for the past several months how many persons in other fields have been interested in hearing more about them.

FIT

The fit for the pants and shirt are both really good.  If you are like me you sometimes question what you might get with a pair of unhemmed pants or whether or not the size of the shirt is accurate with what you normally would find in sizing.  I found that based on the sizes I requested and what I was sent, they were exactly what I was told they would be.  In addition, a quick trip to my local tailor, $7 for hemming the pants to fit and I was stepping out.

COMFORT

I have found the comfort of both the shirt and pants to be really nice.  They both wear well.  They provide really good protection from the sun without making you feel like you are in a sweat bath.  The vents keep you comfortably dry during average day to day wear.  Now, when you are climbing the desert mountains in open sun I did find that I had to come out of the long sleeve shirt fairly rapidly, but you’ll find that with any long sleeve shirt you wear while hiking the desert mountains.  And with the RD design there is no problem coming out of the shirt in seconds.  The easy snap buttons allow you to exit literally in a split second.  This will be a much appreciated feature for private conceal carry, law enforcement, military, and private security teams.

DURABILITY

Durability is always a question we ask and to that end we took extra time crawling through the desert landscape chasing coyotes.  In addition, I had my 4 boys help me break them in with a few dog pile wrestling matches in the yard just to see if we could grind stains in them.  To my surprise after a couple of months of this and over 24 washing cycles they almost look like the day they did when I took them out of the box.  The color is still good, the waste is not stretched, the knees are not worn and they have not shrunk.  That says a lot about their durability after all the boys and I have put them through.  The shirt was comparable with the pants on color and wear; however, we did notice the arms of the long sleeve shirt have shrunk about a 1/2 inch since we took it out of the box with the same 24 washing cycles.  We also noticed that when the sleeves are rolled up they were a little bulky and/or bunched up with the securing of the roll retaining strap & button.

I love the features on both the pants and the shirt.  The pant features are listed as: 100% cotton ripstop, garment color match, low profile mag pockets, phone pocket, knife pockets with reinforced knife clip guard, hand pockets with vented pocket bag, crotch gusset with vents and reinforced overlock double stitching, articulated knee with internal knee pad pocket, kick plate lower leg reinforcement, reinforced rear and side belt loops for durability, reinforced comfort strip waistband inner lining, zipper glove friendly pull tab, and low profile button closure.

The shirt features include: the same 100% cotton ripstop as the pants, color match, money stash pocket inside rear collar, combat sharp collar design, non-shine all buttons, multi-vented cooling system, vertical access nelson pocket on left chest with low profile zipper, drop stash pocket on right chest with low profile zipper, ab concealed equipment pockets on 2 sides, notched side access points, and symmetrical sleeve roll-up functionality design with three-finger roll retaining strap & button.

I do think a pocket for a pen on either chest would be a nice addition.  Might even consider that same option on one of both of the pant legs.

VALUE

It is not every day I dish out $60 for a pair of pants and/or shirt.  In fact, the past several pairs of pants I purchased have all been less than twenty bucks each and shirts are about the same.  But….. I will for Magnum Essential Equipment RD pants and shirts.  I am getting ready to order another pair even as you read this review.  Enjoy yours…

Great job Magnum as you enter the apparel line of tactical gear.
